Each year, approximately 400,000 children worldwide are diagnosed with cancer. Despite medical advances, 20 to 25% of these children still die. In the Netherlands, pediatric cancer research has greatly improved diagnosis and treatments, and as a result, the survival rate of children with cancer has now risen to about 75%. Still, childhood cancer remains the leading cause of infant mortality here. My cousin Tijn was one of those children who learned at age 10 that he had leukemia. Thanks to a bone marrow transplant, he made it through this difficult period and was able to resume his life.
For many children, a future without cancer is still uncertain. Bringing that future closer is only possible through fundamental research into better diagnoses and treatments for childhood cancer. That is why I have decided to raise funds for scientific research into childhood cancer in 2025. I will make it a sporting
challenge: in my 75th year of life, I want to cycle 10,000 kilometers on my old bio-bike, a bicycle without electric assistance. Each donation is tied to the kilometers I cover, and Tijn will help me keep track of everything on social media.
